Presentation and discussion of the draft of the 2nd Report Back - Observatory on Crisis and Alternatives

Financialisation of Portuguese Economy

April 28, 2015, 17h30

Auditorium 3, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation | Lisbon

Framework

The stagnation and the crisis of the Portuguese economy, in a context of growing indebtedness, cannot be separated from the increased weight and power of the financial sector, a process known as financialisation of capitalism. This seminar aims to discuss with academics and political and social actors relevant to ongoing research in the Observatory on Crisis and Alternatives of the Centre for Social Studies, in the preparation of its second annual report.

The seminar will focus on the analysis of the overall process of financialisation of the Portuguese economy, but also its practical implications in two particular sectors, but extraordinarily strategic: water and housing. We intend to discuss how these two sectors were transformed by its relation to finance and critically envision its future evolution under the dominant neoliberalism.

From this diagnosis we will explore alternatives towards the reconfiguration of public policies, especially those which are related to the financial sector and the provision of essential goods.
