ALCORA
Secret alliances and imagined maps: Portuguese Colonial War on the Southern African chessboard

Period
April 1, 2012 to August 31, 2015
Duration
41 months
Abstract

This project has the goal of deepening the knowledge over the contours and implications of the Alcora Exercise (AE), an alliance never publicly known which Portugal established with South Africa and Rhodesia in 1970, to support the fight against nationalist movements. Our work hypothesis is that the alliance revealed by the AE offers important elements to confront already established perspectives over Colonial War and to better understand its consequences.

Outcomes

Because we believe the diffusion of our work will become a valuable tool, we will strive, amongst other things, to improve public knowledge about the several fronts of Portuguese Colonial War, and their consequences.
