Raquel Lima, a PhD candidate at CES, distinguished with the 2026 Emma Goldman Award
March 2025
Raquel Lima, a PhD candidate in the Doctoral Programme Post-Colonialisms and Global Citizenship (CES/FEUC), was distinguished with the 2026 Emma Goldman Award, presented on 5 March in Vienna, Austria, by the Flax Foundation and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM). She thus becomes the first Portuguese, Angolan and São Toméan intellectual to receive this distinction, a recognition of great international significance.
More than an academic distinction, this award invites a critical reflection on the pace and demands of knowledge production, serving as an invitation to slow down, to take care, and to value trajectories that challenge the competitive logic of academia and neoliberalism - in keeping with the legacy of Emma Goldman.
The Emma Goldman Awards are given to female academics whose work stands out in the field of feminism and inequalities in Europe, supporting research and academic development. Of particular relevance is the fact that this award also values artistic research and activist practices, recognising the multitude of intersections that characterise contemporary work.
