Mary Turpie Award

Maria Irene Ramalho distinguished with the Mary Turpie Award

CES researcher, as well as one of its founders, Maria Irene Ramalho, was granted the Mary C. Turpie Award bythe American Studies Association. It is the first time this award is bestowed to someone outside the United States.

The award, created in 1993, aims distinguishing professors and researchers with excellent scientific merit in teaching and research on American studies. Conferred annually, this year the award giving ceremony shall take place during the American Studies Association Annual Convention, in Albuquerque, state of New Mexico, United States of America.

Besides being a CES researcher, Maria Irene Ramalho is Full Professor at the School of Humanities, University of Coimbra and International Affiliate at the Department of Compared Literature, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. She has participated, throughout the years, in several research projects on American studies, compared cultural studies, feminist studies, English and American culture and literature, compared literature and poetry and poetics. Several of her studies have been published by national and foreign scientific journals. Of her publications we highlight Poesia do Mundo, already in its fifth edition, and Poetas do Atlântico: Fernando Pessoa e o Modernismo Anglo-Americano, published in English in the United States (2003) and in Portuguese in Brazil (2007) and in Portugal (2008).
