Abstract

Up till now, intercultural philosophy in African perspective has unreservedly referred to the philosophical dialogue between the so-called West and Africa, termed as a vertical dimension of interculturality. This book however, addresses the issue of a necessary dialogue between the professional African philosophy practiced in formal education institutions and the philosophical wisdom practiced by “sages” (Oruka), as they are called. This dialogue which is designated as intersubjectivation, is epitomized in the horizontal dimension of intercultural philosophy. This dimension has been, to date, ignored in African philosophy.

In addition to two analytical chapters on these issues, the book brings us “inter-views” with "Old" Viegas that address the problems of Western modernity (religion, multiparty democracy, education for values, freedom, etc.) as they meet up with local traditions from the perspective of the Makuwa people of Mozambique.
