Rita Calvário

Biography

Currently I am principal investigator in the project GEAR - Gender inequalities in agriculture in Portugal, 2022-2028 (ref. 2021.03735.CEECIND/CP1698/CT0002). This project examines the situation and struggles of women farmers in family agriculture and migrant women working in agriculture with the aim of better understanding how gender inequalities in Portuguese agriculture are constituted, experienced and contested. This research will provide empirical data and theoretical reflections on the relationships between gender, labor, migration and agriculture in the Southern European context and aims to contribute to the design of fairer and more sustainable agricultural and food policies. In 2022 I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Maria Zambrano program for attracting international talent at the Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) and I am currently a guest researcher at the Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice and Sustainability (BCNUEJ). Between 2018-2021 I was a postdoctoral researcher in the project JUSTFOOD-Das Redes Alimentares Alternativas às Lutas pela Justiça Ambiental (FCT). In 2016, I received my PhD at ICTA-UAB with a thesis on political ecology about alternative food movements in the context of the crisis and politics of austerity in Southern Europe. My PhD took place in the framework of the European project FP7 ENTITLE-European Network of Political Ecology, as a Marie Curie Early Research Fellow. I have a degree in Agronomy, specializing in Rural Sociology and Agrarian Economics, from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, and a master's degree in Land Use and Environmental Planning from the Faculdade de Ciências de Lisboa. I am part of thematic line 4 and of the ECOSOC Workshop.
