Biography

AbdoolKarim Vakil is Lecturer in Contemporary Portuguese History, at the Department of Portuguese & Brazilian Studies, King's College, University of London. He has researched and published on Portuguese intellectual and cultural history, cultural politics, and national identity. He is currently researching representations of Islam and Muslims in the Portuguese cultural imaginary since the 18th century; Portuguese colonial policy and colonial relations with Muslim communities in the 19th and 20th centuries; and the associational history of the contemporary Muslim communities in Portugal (a synthesis of which has recently been published in the authoritative Dicionário Temático de Lusofonia, 2005).
