Biography

José Ricardo has a bachelor's law degree by the Law Faculty of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). During his bachelor studies as well as on his professional career, he developed experience in topics such as critical theory of law; applied research on human rights; interculturality; public international law; Inter-American Human Rights System; and -with a particular emphasis- on the rights of indigenous peoples. Ricardo worked as research assistant, in a public organism of defense of human rights (México City's Human Rights Commission), at the Legal Research Institute of the UNAM (IIJ/UNAM); and the Law Department of the Universidad Iberoamericana. As an external researcher, at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), México. He also was a member of a collective of pro bono lawyers (CAUSA) dedicated to provide legal support mainly to indigenous peoples and communities and the defense of freedom of speech. He also did a professional stay for 6 months as fellow-lawyer at the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights. Currently he is a candidate doctor of the "Human Rights in Contemporary Societies" PhD program at the Center for Social Studies of the Coimbra University. As part of his research work, he does collaborative work with the Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Montaña, Tlachinollan located in La Montaña region of Guerrero, Mexico. His current topics of interest are: interculturality; intercultural dialogues; critic approaches to human rights; public international law; international human rights law; and indigenous peoples rights and movements, among others. He has an scholarship granted by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) through the Legal Research Institute (IIJ/UNAM).
