Internacional Symposium
Cinema and Auteur
December 3rd & 5th, 2011
CES-Lisboa, Picoas Plaza, Rua do Viriato 13, Lj. 117/118
Setting
Since the first discussions about the concept of auteur proposed by French critics during the 1950’s, there is much debate still going on as to whom belongs the prerogative of the a film ‘authorship’. Unlike literary arts and plastic arts, taken in their traditional definition, Cinema deals with group performance and the ‘one author’ attribution, or its reduction to the exclusive director leading figure, becomes sometimes a complex task.
Not all directors can be considered as authors and not all big productions are free of authorial difficulties. Qualities as individualism, originality, audacity or erudition involving independency from the big production and distribution systems, detailed technical control of mise-en-scène or a subconscious capacity for catalysis are some of the criteria used to define a ‘auteur’. The importance of ‘how’ in relation to ‘what’ is filmed and the need to deconstruct language and narrative conventions are proposals of recent critical and theoretical works in this field.
The symposium aims to gather Portuguese and Spanish researchers to discuss the results of their works developed under different disciplines, with distinct methodologies and contrasting approaches. A series of lectures about the difficult materialization of filmic authorship, in any case an undeniable subject every time creation is mentioned in the context of the big screen..
