Overview
The article aims to provide a broader perspective on women’s participation in socioecological conflicts associated with large-scale mining by looking at differences and commonalities across multiple cases in Environmental Justice Atlas(EJAtlas www.ejatlas.org). Literature on women’s opposition to mining is limited, focusing mainly on the gender specific negative impacts of the activity, but less on their organizational forms, strategies and motivations. Moreover, studies usually follow a single-case/project approach or, at best, carry a regional analysis. The study asks the following questions: how do women participate in mining opposition movements on a global scale? What roles do they assume? Are there female leaders and do women have a voice in activist spaces? Do they face gender-specific challenges? What are their motivations?
Is there diversity – race, class, age, etc. – among women opposing mining activities? Methodologically, it uses the EJAtlas database as a research tool, namely a sample of approximately 100 conflicts arising from mineral ore exploration and processing that identify women as a mobilizing group. Moreover, the data from the Atlas is complemented with information from literature review on women research that coincides with conflicts in the sample.
