Few 20th-century thinkers have left such a lasting and far-reaching mark as Antonio Gramsci. Written largely whilst imprisoned by the fascists, his Prison Notebooks developed a vocabulary - hegemony, philosophy of praxis, subalternity, organic intellectual, passive revolution - which has long since transcended the boundaries of political theory to influence history, anthropology, cultural studies, international relations and political economy. It is precisely these echoes of his thought that this colloquium addresses.

Organised by the International Gramsci Association - Portugal, in collaboration with the Centre for Social Studies and the Institute of Philosophical Studies at the University of Coimbra, and to mark the Portuguese reissue of the ‘Selection from the Prison Notebooks´ by Edições 70, this colloquium brings together researchers from different institutions and academic disciplines. Throughout the event, we will reflect on the reception, translation and circulation of Gramsci’s work; examine the contemporary relevance of Gramsci’s thought in the face of current political and social challenges; and explore its influence across various fields of knowledge.

More than just a commemorative event, this colloquium aims to establish itself as a forum for lively debate across disciplines and generations, open to student participation, capable of bringing Gramsci back into the present - a present that his thought continues to help us understand
