A talk between three Brazilian researchers about their trajectories in academic and activist research, their relationships with writing and with the construction of meaning from the margins. How can we create, resist and communicate in a world that is so uniform and governed by socio-racial hierarchies and systemic violence? The resistance we discuss is not only a subject of study in our academic careers but also permeates our daily lives, experiences, and places of belonging.

In the first part of the conversation, Gabriela Rocha talks about identities fractured and ‘erased’ by colonialism and the power of their counter-narratives. Carla Ernesto will discuss diversity from a critical perspective, considering markers of race and gender in advertising. The debate on diversity in the context of the advertising market remains rooted in exclusionary and whitewashed dynamics, where memory and ancestry are constantly erased, reflecting the perpetuation of racism. Finally, Ariane Brito discusses how social, racial, class, and gender markers permeate the act of writing and proposes a practical writing activity that invites participants to reflect on their own trajectory in the production of knowledge. The exercise highlights writing as a political act of resistance, confronting fear, silencing and the hierarchies that regulate who can write and publish.

Ariane Brito | PhD candidate in Psychology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ (CAPES scholarship recipient), Master's degree in Psychology and Health from Dom Bosco Catholic University - UCDB (CAPES scholarship recipient), specialist in Psychological Assessment and Gestalt Therapy. She is a member of the research groups ‘The political power of emotions: configuration, emergence and circulation’ and ‘Contemporary situation and structural dimensions: perspectives in critical phenomenology and Gestalt approach’, both from the Postgraduate Programme in Psychology (UFRJ). She researches and teaches courses on the production of women's subjectivities, whiteness, aesthetics and writing, and articulates decolonial feminisms and Gestalt therapy.

Carla Ernesto | PhD candidate in Communication at the Graduate Programme in Communication at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) in the research area of Media and Communication Strategies. Master's degree in Communication from the same programme in the research area of Media and Contemporary Identities. She is a member of the research groups ‘Nós Pesquisa Criativa’ (UFSM) and ‘PLURAIS: Creativity and meanings of DEI in communication,’ as well as the teaching project ‘Publicidade 50/50’ and the outreach project ‘Production of communication materials focused on gender and intersections’ at the Federal University of Pampa. She holds a degree in Social Communication - Advertising and Publicity from the Federal University of Pampa (UNIPAMPA). Her research focuses on: Writing in advertising, Afrocentric epistemology, intersectional and anti-racist perspectives in advertising.

Gabriela Rocha | Researcher at CES, PhD in Post-Colonialism and Global Citizenship, works on the projects ‘Europe from the other perspective: politics, struggles and counternarratives for the construction of a society free of racism in Portugal’, "FILMASPORA. Popular Diaspora Films: Towards a New Cine-Geography of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area‘ and collaborates on the project ’BIOTRACES: Biodiversity and Transformative Change for a Plural and Nature-Positive Societies". Currently, her interests focus on researching anti-racist movements in the European context, critical race theory, combating environmental racism and intersectional feminisms.
