This seminar aims to discuss the transformation of cities resulting from changes in territorial practices and the development of tourism spaces arising from the process of democratisation in Portuguese and Brazilian society.

Ricardo Alexandre Paiva, professor at the Federal University of Ceará, will present the book Turismo, Democracia e Direito ao Território [Tourism, Democracy and the Right to Territory], edited by Ricardo Alexandre Paiva, Alexandre Queiroz Pereira and Beatriz Helena Nogueira Diógenes.

The book will be analysed and discussed through research on coastal architecture by Susana Lobo, professor at DARQ-UC and author of one of the book’s chapters, and Claudino Ferreira, professor at FEUC and researcher at CES. The session will be moderated by Gonçalo Canto Moniz (CES/DARQ-UC).

Ricardo Alexandre Paiva | Architect and Urban Planner (UFC, 1997), holder of a Master’s degree (2005) and a PhD (2011) in Architecture and Urban Planning from FAU-USP. Paiva undertook postdoctoral research (2019) at IST-University of Lisbon and at DOCOMOMO International, with a CAPES scholarship. He is an Associate Professor at UFC, a CNPq Research Productivity Fellow (PQ-2), coordinator of LoCAU/IAUD-UFC and leader of the [arq.con.br] network. Paiva was coordinator of the PPGAU+D-UFC (2015–2018; 2021–2025). His work spans the fields of architecture, urban planning, tourism and the city; he is the author, editor and co-author of several books and chapters. Susana Lobo An architect, she graduated from DARQ-FCTUC (2002), where she has been teaching since 1998 and is currently an Assistant Professor. She holds a PhD in Architecture, specialising in the Theory and History of Architecture, from the University of Coimbra (2013), with a thesis entitled Arquitetura e Turismo: planos e projetos. As cenografias do lazer na costa portuguesa, da 1.a República à Democracia [Architecture and Tourism: plans and projects. The scenographies of leisure on the portuguese coast, from the first republic to democracy], for which she received a grant from the FCT and was awarded an honourable mention in the André Jordan Prize. Since 2015, Lobo has been part of the Coimbra Studio PhD programme at DArq-FCTUC and is responsible for the course module on Urban Planning, Architecture and Tourism. She is a full researcher at CITUA-IST/UL and an associate researcher at CES-UC and CEArq-TD. She is participating in the European project “UTOPIZE - Urban Transformation through Open Participation and Inclusivity for Citizen Empowerment” under the HORIZON-MISS-2024-NEB-01-02 programme – New governance models for the co-design and co-construction of public spaces in neighbourhoods by communities.

Claudino Ferreira | PhD in Sociology (FEUC - 2006). Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra, and Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies. Co-Coordinator of the Doctoral Programme in ‘Sociology - Cities and Urban Cultures’. Areas of interest: Cities and urban cultures; Cultural and urban policies; Sociology of the arts and culture; Cultural and creative sector; Cities, ways of life and identities; Tourism, leisure and lifestyles; Social science methodology. He is the author of several publications in these areas, around which he has been conducting research.
