Roundtable

Fundamental rights in perspective: challenges in the inclusion of persons with disabilities

July 2, 2025, 14h30 - 16h30

Online event

The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, as an essential legal framework for the protection of fundamental rights, enshrines dignity, freedom, and equality as universal values applicable to all people. The Charter grants persons with disabilities the right to benefit from specific measures that guarantee their autonomy, social inclusion, active participation in community life, and professional integration.

This roundtable provides a space for dialogue between representatives of public entities and civil society organisations, with the aim of reflecting on the challenges and opportunities in promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities. Through the sharing of experiences and good practises, the aim is to reflect on the role of the Charter as a guiding instrument in the design and implementation of inclusive public policies. The roundtable will begin with a brief intervention by each speaker, followed by an exchange of ideas facilitated by the moderator, who will introduce issues and challenges for debate. There will also be a space for a Q&A, with the aim of promoting open reflection.

This is the first event in the series “The Charter of Fundamental Rights in Action”, part of the project “FAIR - EU Charter of Fundamental Rights: Awareness raising and Instruments to promote a culture of Rights”, funded by the European Union and implemented in Portugal by the Permanent Observatory for Justice of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra. The project is coordinated at European level by Fondazioni Giacomo Brodolini (Italy) and implemented in partnership with organisations from nine European Union countries.
