Presentation of the novel ‘Neblina’ by Ângelo Fernandes, focused on of sexual abuse of minors. Discussion about the author’s work in the field of sexual violence against minors, namely through the association ‘Quebrar o Silêncio’, which supports men and boys who are victims and survivors of sexual violence.
This talk features Ângelo Fernandes, founder of ‘Quebrar o Silêncio’, in dialogue with Júlia Garraio, CES researcher.

Ângelo Fernandes is the founder of Quebrar o Silêncio [Breaking the Silence] - the first Portuguese association providing specialised support for men and boys who are victims and survivors of sexual violence - and author of the book ‘De Que Falamos Quando Falamos de Violência Sexual Contra Crianças?’ [What Are We Talking About When We Talk About Sexual Violence Against Children?], a guide for parents and carers on the prevention of child sexual abuse, and the novel ‘Neblina’ [Fog].
In addition to providing support to male survivors, he works to inform and raise awareness among the general public about sexual violence, specifically against men and boys. He conducts training on sexual violence for professionals from various fields and university students and runs workshops for parents and carers on the prevention of sexual violence against children.
Júlia Garraio is a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra. She is developing the project Dis/entangling Rape: Sexual Violence in Portuguese Literature and Cinema in the 21st Century, as part of the FCT’s Scientific Employment Stimulus Programme (CEEC). She is co-PI of the FCT project UnCoveR – Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape. She was a member of the Historical Research Group of the Independent Commission for the Study of Child Sexual Abuse in the Portuguese Catholic Church. She is a member of the international research group SVAC-Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict (https://warandgender.net/about). She is a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Women’s Studies, where she oversees the reviews section. She has participated in several projects in the areas of Memory Studies, Gender Studies, Media, Literature and Cultural Studies.
