Overview
In recent decades, feminist theorists dedicated to studies on post-feminism have emphasised the materialisation of this phenomenon in discourses constituted in the interweaving of neoliberal, neoconservative and anti-feminist ideologies. Although they have great circulation and visibility in the mediatized public sphere, the intersections between post-feminist discourses, subjectivities, and the agency of women in religious contexts are still little explored. Understanding this discussion as important for the current debates on the boundaries between the religious and the secular, this webinar will address these intersections with a focus on the Brazilian evangelical context. To this end, we will shed light on the ambivalent practises of evangelical women in positions of authority and visibility, such as Ana Paula Valadão (Lagoinha Baptist Church) and Cristiane Cardoso (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God), exploring the ways in which they interweave elements of post-feminist grammar and the Pentecostal world-view in the constitution of idealised models of Christian female subjectivity. Based on these reflections, we will discuss this model as a social device for transgressing and/or maintaining the patriarchal status quo, exploring its meanings and possible political uses in neoconservative times.
