Workshop

The role of the community economy in Black Political Economy

Luciane Lucas dos Santos (CES)

October 10, 2024, 16h00 (GMT+1)

Online event

By looking critically at racial asymmetries in economics and drawing attention to the agency of black women, Caroline Houssein has sought to contribute to two relevant fields: Feminist Political Economy and Black Political Economy. Hossein has also discussed the role of Black Social Economy when looking at co-operatives. In this text written with Megan Pearson – “Black Feminists in the Third Sector: Here Is Why We Choose to use the term Solidarity Economy” - Hossein raises a number of questions. Based on these, we intend to: 1. problematise the question of agency in the Social and Solidarity Economies; 2. discuss the relationship between the solidarity economy and the concept of community-based economies; 3. reflect on how a Black Political Economy can densify the critical reflection currently taking place in the context of the Solidarity Economy.

To participate in this workshop, you must read the article Hossein, C. S., & Pearson, M. (2023, Jan 17th). Black Feminists in the Third Sector: Here Is Why We Choose to use the term Solidarity Economy. The Review of Black Political Economy, 50(2). 222–248
