Mothers' Movements: Activism and Social Transformation

Tatiana Moura (CES)

November 26, 2024, 17h00 (GMT+1)

Online event

The aim is to analyse the movements of mothers and relatives of victims of police massacres (chacinas) as agents of social and political transformation. Some academic groups and activist mothers have already discussed their experiences campaigning for social justice, human rights, and improvements in the living conditions of their communities. Emblematic cases have included mothers' movements against police violence, for reform of the health system, and quality education. The role of mothers in community mobilisation and the formation of support networks is central to this analysis, in which grief is a verb. Finally, the importance of these movements in promoting significant changes in public policies and social awareness will be highlighted.
