There are approximately 117.2 million people in situations of forced migration in 2023, fleeing from war, violent conflicts, or persecution. According to UNHCR, individuals persecuted for their gender identity, sexual orientation, or sexual characteristics are entitled to international protection, in a reality where over 70 countries criminalize same-sex relationships. This SHARP Talk focuses on presenting the issue of asylum seekers based on their gender identity and sexual orientation in two diverse contexts: within the European Union, with Greece as the point of entry, and in the Kakuma Refugee Camp (Kenya), currently home to over 200,000 people.
