In this webinar, we will discuss the problem of so-called deepfakes, manipulated images of sexual content that make up one of the modalities of image-based sexual abuse (IBSA).  Deepfakes, images manipulated using artificial intelligence or image editing software such as Photoshop, are a growing reality that has triggered legal issues, challenging legal frameworks and traditional approaches to sexual violence.

In this context, we seek to promote discussion on the digital manipulation of sexually suggestive images and their impact on victim-survivors, articulating the experiences and knowledges of academics, activists, and professionals in the field of sexual violence.

Bio notes

Ângelo Fernandes is the founder of Quebrar o Silêncio - the first Portuguese association to provide specialised support for men and boys who are survivors of sexual violence - and author of the book De Que Falamos Quando Falamos de Violência Sexual Contra Crianças?[What Are We Talking About When We Talk About Sexual Violence Against Children?], a guide aimed at fathers, mothers, and carers with guidelines for the prevention of child sexual abuse. As well as supporting male survivors at Quebrar o Silêncio, he works to inform and sensitise the general public about sexual violence, specifically against men and boys, helping to eradicate myths and beliefs about sexual abuse and deconstruct gender stereotypes. Fernandes runs training sessions on sexual violence for professionals from various fields and university students, and runs workshops for fathers, mothers, and carers to promote the prevention of sexual violence against children. He writes about sexual violence for Sapo24 and other media.

Maria João Faustino has a PhD in Psychology from the University of Auckland, where she did research on the heteronormalisation of anal sex in a heterosexual context and its coercive dynamics. She has done research on sexual violence, gendered dynamics and media representations. She has developed the theme of sexual consent from a critical perspective in scientific publications (e.g. Violence Against Women; Feminism and Psychology) and in the media. Faustino has collaborated with feminist organisations and those supporting victims and survivors of sexual violence, and on projects on image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) and violence in intimacy. She was a researcher of the project UnCover - Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape.

Inês Marinho is 26 years old and the founder of Movimento Não Partilhes. As an activist, she has dedicated the last few years to raising awareness about image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) and its consequences, particularly among younger audiences. She has organised information sessions, talks, training sessions and debates in schools and universities, which have contributed to putting IBSA on the political and media agenda.

Carolina Esteves Soares has been a Victim Support Technician at APAV - the Portuguese Association for Victim Support - since 2017. In the summer of 2023, she became the operational manager of the Linha Internet Segura [Safe Internet Line]. Soares is also a Content Assessment Specialist as a member of INHOPE. She holds a Master's degree in History, specialising in the History of International Relations, from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and a degree in History from the same university. She is now studying for a PhD in History, specialising in Modern History, at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH), as part of a PhD scholarship funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (2017-2022). In addition to her academic work to date, she has received training in human rights from Amnesty International, training to support victims of crime and cybercrime, as well as content assessment training organised by Interpol's Crimes against Children Unit. She has also been trained in OSINT.
