Cultural Heritage Open Workshops: Sharing Collaborative Experiences

7th WORKSHOP | Working heritage with and for the community: CIIPC's collaborative experiences with the population in Cacela (Vila Real de Santo António)

Catarina Oliveira (CIIPC/ CMVRSA)

April 15, 2024, 15h30-17h30

Room 2.37, Building 1, Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, University of the Algarve + Online

The Cacela Heritage Research and Information Centre/CMVRSA opened its doors to the public in 2005 in the village of Santa Rita (Vila Real de Santo António municipality) and has been developing its activity around 5 fundamental axes: identifying and researching; informing, interpreting and enjoying; educating for heritage; defining a quality cultural programme for Cacela; and involving the local community in joint projects. The rich and diverse heritage that identifies the territory of Cacela has been the starting point for the design of projects and activities capable of unleashing dynamics of interpretation, learning, enjoyment and creative intervention. Alongside an effort to broaden and diversify audiences, bringing them closer to the region's heritage, the involvement of the local community, where the CIIPC is located, has been a central purpose of the work carried out: an intervention rooted in the community, with its active participation, which has fostered a sense of belonging and relevant, lasting relationships.

In this workshop, we will look at some of the strategies found by the CIIPC to ensure the involvement and active participation of the local population in the processes of research, interpretation, and valorisation of heritage. We will highlight the involvement of members of the local population in actions to enhance and publicise the heritage (workshops, interpretive routes, heritage preservation actions and exhibitions); in festive celebrations (the Maios and traditions associated with the cult of the dead); and in “Tomilho”, a newspaper with and for the local community.
