This seminar is part of the series The Weft of Memory: dates to count, organised by the coordination of the thematic line Europe and the Global South: heritages and dialogues. The series aims to mark and reflect on less resounding dates, but equally determinant for the construction of the 25th of April 1974 and the independence of Portuguese-speaking African countries and East Timor. The seminars take place online, whenever possible on the date to be marked, every month, at 16h00, throughout 2023.

27 July 1974: Law 7/74 in which Portugal recognises the right of the peoples of the colonies to independence, a debate with Pedro de Pezarat Correia (Retired General and Retired Guest Professor at UC), Maria Inácia Rezola (ESCS-IPL / President of the mission structure of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April) and Rui Bebiano (CD 25 de Abril/FLUC/CES), moderated by Teresa Almeida Cravo (FEUC/CES).


Bio notes
Maria Inácia Rezola holds a PhD in Institutional History and Contemporary Politics from FSCH-UNL and is a researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History of the same faculty (IHC-UNL). She is a Coordinating Professor at the School of Social Communication (ESCS-IPL). She is the author of works such as 25 de Abril - Mitos de uma Revolução (Esfera dos Livros, 2007) and Melo Antunes, uma biografia política (Âncora, 2012).

Pedro Pezarat Correia is a retired Major General (Army) and a visiting professor at the University of Coimbra. An active participant in the MFA, he was a member of the Council of the Revolution from its foundation until its extinction. In Angola, during the 25 April, he played a leading role in the decolonisation process. Author of a vast bibliography on the 25 April, decolonisation, geopolitics and geostrategy, conflicts, namely the book ...da descolonização, an extended version of his doctoral thesis at the University of Coimbra.

Rui Bebiano is a historian, retired professor of contemporary history at the Department of History, Archeology and Arts at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra and researcher at the Centre for Social Studies. His current research interests are history of political ideas and cultural movements from the 1950s to the present, in particular the field of the history of intellectuals, representations of utopia, processes of exclusion and silencing, and relationships between history and memory.
