Room 2, CES-Coimbra

Abstract

The seminar will discuss two emerging issues in the Unified Health System (SUS ) of Brazil and their interrelationship .The first is the development of the concept of  'quaternary prevention' in primary health care (PHC): identification of people at risk of excess medical and health interventions and building ethically acceptable alternatives. The second is the growth of the institutional use of complementary medicines in the Brazilian APS. Some conceptual and political challenges of this relationship are discussed and the preliminary results of empirical and theoretical research are presented .
