Innovation for Resilience: A Relevant Agenda

Abstract

Several European regions have suffered the effects of the crisis, rise of unemployment and reduction of growth. In parallel the recent policy discussion, with the development of RIS3 - Research and innovation strategies for smart specialisation, focused S&T and innovation contributions towards more resilient territories. This seminar will discuss the effects of the crisis in three main issues: the role of innovation to the capacity of regions to adapt and evolve, what smart specialisation means in this context of economic downturn, and its consequences to Social Sciences.

This initiative is organized by CIEO in partnership with CES , and has the support of CRIA - Division of Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer of the University of Algarve, through UALG Business Lab project , funded by the Operational Programme Algarve 21. Admission is free, but registration required through the website (www.cieo.pt).

Short bios:

Phil Cooke: International renowned scholar in regional economic development, he is research Professor and the founding director of the Centre for Advanced Studies, University of Cardiff. Currently Phil Cooke is a visiting Professor at Bergen, Norway. His research interests lie in the studies of innovation, knowledge creation and exchange, entrepreneurship, clusters and networks. He co-edited the first & second editions of 'Regional Innovation Systems' (UCL Press & Routledge) in 1998 & 2004. Phil Cooke is also Editor of European Planning Studies, a key journal in the field. In 2003 he was elected Academician of the UK Academy of Social Sciences. He is board member of the Canadian ISRN and Swedish CIND and CIRCLE research centres. Professor Cooke is a UK government advisor on innovation, and advises national & regional governments, the EU, OECD, World Bank and UNIDO on regional innovation. Currently He is Official Adviser to European Parliament Committee on Regional Development.

Tiago Santos Pereira: Research fellow at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, where he was executive director and coordinator of the Research Group on Science, Economy and Society. With a DPhil in Science and Technology Policy Studies from SPRU, University of Sussex, his research interests are focused on the governance of S&T.

Hugo Pinto: Post-doctoral researcher at Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra and Invited Professor in the Faculty of Economics, University of Algarve. He is interested in the study of regional innovation systems, knowledge production, and the economic crisis.

Teresa Noronha: Full Professor of the University of Algarve where was the founding president of the Research Centre for Spatial and Organisational Dynamics. In the field of Economics of Regional Innovation, she has been invited scholar in different countries. Currently Professor Noronha divides her time between the Algarve and Toronto.

João Guerreiro: Full Professor of the University of Algarve, he was the architect of CRIA – the technology transfer and entrepreneurship division of the University of Algarve. Formerly, Professor Guerreiro was the president of the regional authority (CCDR Algarve) and Rector of the University of Algarve. He was the coordinator of the RIS3 Algarve.
