Abstract

The book will be presented by CES postgraduate students, with the author’s presence, and followed by a debate.

Synopsis: «With this  book I publish the  sociological research I conducted between 1983-84 on local courts or people's courts of Cape Verde, requested by the government of the young independent country presided by Commander Pedro Pires. The request came specifically by the Minister of Justice at the time, Dr. David Hopffer de Almada.

In the post-independence context, the establishment of people's courts or local courts in Cape Verde emerged as a priority. The negative connotations sometimes attributed to popular justice led to a more neutral term, local courts. Their rapid spread was due not only to the ease of implementation, since they waived the technical, material and human requirements of formal justice, but also due to a strong focus on the potential of these bodies to promote social peace and act as a political, cultural and social school for the development of the people».
