1st Conference Cycle on "Cultural Heritages of Portuguese Influence"
Cultural Heritages of Portuguese Influence
January 18 to 31, 2011
University of Coimbra
Abstract
The conference cycle "Cultural Heritages of Portuguese Influence" is organized by the doctoral programme with the same name, offered by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra.
The doctoral programme, as detailed in its institutional presentation — http://www.ces.uc.pt/doutoramentos/patrimonios/ — aims at establishing and developing itself as a platform for a plural and comprehensive reflection about the phenomenology and ethic of studies on material and immaterial cultural heritages, both concrete and vague, produced by the Portuguese presence throughout the world, whether by expansionist and colonial processes of more immediate identification or by individual adventurism or of small institutionally autonomous groups. These are issues that, for different reasons, have generated controversies which, in favour of a healthy and loyal dialogue, cooperation and solidarity between Peoples, must be settled and explained using scientific methods of knowledge construction, which is pursued by the research in cultural heritages (as the core of this doctoral programme's goals and actions).
The conference cycle - the 1st one, as we intent to repeat it with some regularity and diversity - will be a public exercise of debate within this theme according to that perspective, using a group of experts and fundamental issues, as well as some opportunities. Some examples are the application of University of Coimbra to UNESCO World Heritage List, the creation of WHPO (World Heritage of Portuguese Origin) Network and the recent edition, by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, of the three-volume work "Património de Origem Portuguesa no Mundo: arquitectura e urbanismo" (in English: "Cultural Heritages of Portuguese Influence in the World: architecture and urbanism"), organized by José Mattoso. For example, and in an uncommon act, this work will be made public and discussed only one month after the launch of its last volumes.
