Advanced Training Course

Environmental inequalities. Tools for analysis and intervention

December 17, 2011, 09h30

CES-Lisboa, Picoas Plaza, Rua do Viriato 13, Lj. 117/118

Description

A clean and healthy environment is vital for everyone's quality of life, but the quality of the environment can vary between different areas and communities.  People who are socially and economically disadvantaged often live in the worst environments.  Environmental inequality refers to the unequal social distribution of environmental risks and hazards and access to environmental goods and services. As such the term links environmental and social justice concerns and is closely related to the broader normative and campaigning framework of environmental justice. Tackling environmental inequalities and ensuring that all people have access to a good quality environment in the future is critical to a socially equitable transition to ecological sustainability.

The course aims at promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and capacity building so that researchers, policymakers and practitioners are better able to understand and address environmental inequalities in the Portuguese context. Focusing on a wide range of environment and social justice issues, the course will seek to review and consolidate progress on environmental inequalities research in the international context and in Portugal, and to build capacity and help shape the future direction of interdisciplinary research and policy action in this important area.
