Creates ombudsperson to promote the rights of its community members

The Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the University of Coimbra (UC) has established an Ombudsperson, an independent body whose objective is to defend and promote the rights and legitimate interests of the members of the CES community.

Although the Ombudsperson does not hold any power of decision, his/her action will be fundamental in directing the recommendations that he/she believes to be necessary or appropriate to the competent bodies, exercising his/her activity with total independence, impartiality and freedom in relation to the bodies foreseen in the CES Statutes, and being subject to the duty of secrecy under the terms of the law, in relation to information concerning the reserve of intimacy and private life.

By sending an e-mail, the members of the CES Community may present the Ombudsperson with participations or expositions due to actions or omissions of the bodies, their holders, associates or collaborators, as well as formulate suggestions or recommendations relative to the subjects and matters foreseen in the CES Code of Conduct (except those matters which are the scientific competence of the Ethics Committee and/or the Scientific Board).

Sílvia Portugal, CES researcher and Assistant Professor of the Economics Faculty of the UC, will be the first person to occupy this position which is of the greatest importance for the institution.
