CES leads EU initiative that promotes culture and creativity in rural areas
The Centre for Social Studies (CES) and the European Network of Cultural Centres (ENCC) will lead a new Community Group focused on the Europen Rural Pact practises dedicatedt to culture and creativity in rural areas. This pioneering initiative, conceived within the Horizon Europe IN SITU - Place-based innovation of cultural and creative industries in non-urban areas research project, will initially cover 26 European countries and represents a significant shift in approaching rural cultural development.
The project seeks to change the traditional paradigm that limits rural culture to tourism and recreation, promoting a more comprehensive and sustainable vision. The Community Group will serve as a dynamic collaboration platform, offering a diverse program of activities including online seminars, summer schools, and advanced training. A highlight will be the IN SITU conference, scheduled for May 2026, bringing together experts and professionals from across Europe. Key objectives include creating a comprehensive cultural mapping of European rural regions, developing specific cultural strategies for non-urban areas, and identifying new funding opportunities.
The project also aims to establish an innovative policy framework supporting cultural work in a systematic and participatory manner. The initiative is open to a diverse set of participants, including cultural professionals and organizations, local and regional governments, development agencies, researchers, educational institutions, and Local Action Groups. This inclusive approach aims to create a robust collaboration network that effectively contributes to rural communities' sustainable development.
The focus on local sustainability and cultural heritage as territory-based public resources marks a new era in European rural development. With this initiative, the European Union (EU) reaffirms its commitment to revitalizing rural areas, recognizing culture as a fundamental pillar of regional development.
