Seminar

Whose power? What are the pathways for energy transition in Portugal? Debate with grassroots groups, local movements and national associations.

April 22, 2025, 9h00-17h00

Room 1, CES | Alta

The GREENPATHS - European Knowledge Hub On Just Transition Pathways project at CES invites you to a civil society seminar with a focus on the social impacts of the green transition in Portugal. As demand for critical minerals like lithium is promoted as a solution to climate change, we explore the costs and benefits and discuss the social, environmental and economic impacts of the lithium rush.

Starting from the observation that new extractivist plans are emerging under the green transition, we invite you to discuss the problem of energy choices, especially in context of Earth Day 2025 and its theme ‘Our Power, Our Planet’.

The seminar welcomes researchers, activists and civil society representatives who are involved in the emblematic case of lithium extraction in Barroso to create a critical debate on the future development of green transition policy in Portugal.

We invite participants to engage in a critical discussion of new forms of extractivism and some of the underlying assumptions, contextualising the Barroso case into the broader planned transition in Portugal and beyond.
