International Colloquium
Media, Masculinities and Sexualities
March 13, 2025, 9h30-18h30
Room 1, CES | Alta
This event seeks to bring together researchers, professionals, activists, journalists and students in an interdisciplinary and critical meeting aimed at sharing knowledge and opening a multidimensional dialogue on the intersection between the media, masculinities and sexualities.
In a context where media representations mould - and often perpetuate - gender norms and stereotypes, this Colloquium aims to deepen reflection on the role of the media in the construction of masculinities and the expression of sexualities.
In recent years, discussions around masculinities have become increasingly relevant, both in academia and in the wider public sphere, fuelled by feminist movements and the fight for LGBTQI+ rights. Media narratives play a central role in shaping social and cultural perceptions, influencing power dynamics, social relations, behaviours, and identities.
The proliferation of digital platforms and the diversification of the media have created opportunities for alternative and counter-hegemonic expressions, while paradoxically reinforcing traditional and patriarchal norms on gender and sexuality.
The Gender and Sexualities Working Group of the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences (SOPCOM), the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, through the Observatório Masculinidades.pt, and the Communication Section of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, promoters of the event, invite the broader community to participate in this space for reflection and sharing.
