International Seminar

Climate justice, inequalities and biodiversity loss: why is it not possible to address biodiversity without considering the territory’s social and economic asymmetries?

April 30, 2025, 9h-12h (BR)

Auditorium - NAP - Núcleo de Apoio à Pesquisa, Federal University of São Carlos (Brazil)

This international seminar, promoted by the Multidisciplinary and Integrated Centre for Studies, Training and Intervention in Solidarity Economy (NuMI-Ecosol) of the Federal University of São Carlos and the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, as part of the BIOTraCes project, aims to broaden the debate on the loss of biodiversity in a global context and its relationship with the deepening of existing asymmetries. As has been seen, marginalised and vulnerable groups have been disproportionately affected by climate change in territories.

The starting point for this seminar is the idea that issues of climate and environmental justice cannot be debated without reflecting on gender inequalities in territories, as well as the many social asymmetries capable of deepening the imbalances that already exist, whether in sharing the burden of climate change or the benefits brought about by biodiversity regeneration strategies. In this regard, three points are raised for reflection: (I) the relevance of intersectionality for the design of biodiversity regeneration strategies, (II) the contribution of Solidarity Economy to the field of nature-based solutions (NbS) and (III) the relationship between health, biodiversity and socio-environmental justice.

This event takes place as part of a series of dialogues (seminars and workshops) that the CES team of the BIOTraCes Project is organising with universities, research centres and civil society organisations for a broader reflection that also involves other geographies, with inspiring local initiatives and policies for thinking about the challenge of biodiversity.
