Seminar
Climate Change as Class War
April 4, 2025, 15h00 (GMT+1)
Online
ECOSOC continues its exploration of recent works on Ecology and Marxism. Following discussions on influential contributions by Andreas Malm, Jason Moore, Kohei Saito, Stefania Barca, and John B. Foster, this online seminar, co-organized with the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, will focus on Climate Change as Class War (Verso, 2022) by Professor Matthew Huber, a groundbreaking text in the field of Eco-Marxism.
In this book, Huber argues that the climate crisis is not fundamentally a matter of scientific skepticism or individual actions like reducing carbon footprints—it is a class issue, rooted in the ownership, control, and profits derived from material production. According to Huber, addressing the crisis requires class struggle: confronting the carbon-intensive capitalist class responsible for perpetuating climate change. He asserts that political and economic elites cannot solve this crisis, and instead advocates for a working-class-based climate politics that aligns material and ecological interests. Central to his vision is the need to build union power within the energy system that must be radically transformed. Huber draws parallels with early 20th-century socialist movements, emphasizing that winning the climate struggle demands internationalism and global working-class solidarity.
The seminar will feature an introduction by the author, Matthew Huber, followed by commentary from Nuno Teles, a specialist in Marxist Economics at the Federal University of Bahia, and Jonas Van Vossole, a researcher in Marxism and Political Ecology at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra.
