Workshop
Beyond the state: the (i)legitimacies of policing in Brazil
Herbert Bachett (PPGSOL - UnB)
September 13, 2024, 14h00 (GMT+1)
Online event
Policing directly affects our security in an increasingly insecure world, whether due to crime or police violence. However, policing is not just about the police. Various agencies (legal and illegal, public and private, state and non-state) police our daily lives, producing control over territories and populations. We legitimise their domination through fear or consent, sometimes trusting ‘crime’ more than the police. This seminar will deal with the legitimacy and powers that policing holds over populations: who are the central agents in control of different urban spaces - peripheries, middle-class, and wealthy areas? How do people from different socio-economic backgrounds live together and legitimise policing practices? These and other questions will be the subject of our debate.
