The Iraqi Revolution of 1958 was the result of a historical combination of internal and external factors. In this context, this doctoral research aims to address the external scope of the Iraqi revolutionary process from two connected axes: (1) the dispute over spheres of influence between the USA and the USSR during the early years of the Cold War, of which the Iraqi Communist Party and the Partisans for Peace were part of and (2) the anti-imperialist struggle in Iraq in the 1950s, in which peace was transformed into a symbol of self-determination for the Iraqi people and instrumentalised to bring together different social forces in the revolutionary cause against the British forces and the Hashemite monarchy.

Paulo Barata holds a Bachelor's degree in Economic Sciences from the University of Fortaleza, a Master's degree in International Relations from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC), a PhD in International Relations from the San Tiago Dantas Postgraduate Programme (UNESP/UNICAMP/PUC-SP) and is a researcher in the International Conflict Studies Group at PUC-SP. He is currently visiting CES for a doctoral internship.
