Seminar | Inter-Thematic group on Migrations (ITM)

Migration and social reproduction in a intersectional perspective

Sabrina Marchetti (Ca' Foscari - Universidade de Veneza)

September 27, 2023, 16h00 (GMT+1)

Online

Moderator: Carla Panico (Doutoranda CES/FEUC)

Overview

This seminar is based on Sabrina Marchetti's recent book 'Migration and domestic work' (Springer 2022) in which she deals with the recent scholarly debate on the experience of migrant domestic workers, at the global level. In this seminar, Marchetti will tackle the nexus between migration and domestic work with a multi-layered approach. She will look into the issue of (paid) domestic work in migratory contexts by challenging the notion of feminization of migration and proposing an intersectional understanding of gender divisions in social reproduction, in the process of the transnational marketization of care. She will also discuss the results of the DomEQUAL project to show how (migrant) domestic workers organize collectively to resist the exploitation in the sector and improve the social representation of their jobs.
