The documentary film “Disability and Independent Living in Portugal: places, bodies and struggles” convenes experiences and reflections of people with disabilities in Portugal whose struggles are inspired by the principles of independent living. Produced within the research project - DECIDE - Disability and self-determination: the challenge of Independent living in Portugal (PTDC/IVC-SOC/6484/2014 - POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016803), this documentary is a way to disseminate to a wider audience a part of the research work developed at CES between 2018 and 2020 - in close relationship with the Centre for Independent Living - around the first independent living pilot project created in Lisbon in 2015. 

The Independent Living Movement for People with Disabilities emerges in the United States of America (USA) in the late 1960s, with the first Independent Living Centre being created in Berkeley in 1972. In Europe this movement only emerged in the 1980s with the first Independent Living centre being created in the United Kingdom - Hampshire Centre for Independent Living - in 1984. In Portugal, the claim for the right to Independent Living for people with disabilities dates back to the beginning of the second half of the 1990s, only gaining political projection in the second decade of the 21st century.
