About
The transvestigender academic literature makes much use of the word displacement as a useful concept for thinking about a pressing feature in the life stories of transvestigender people. Having to leave home, school, change cities, change lives are historical narratives of this group. Homes and drop-in centres for trans and LGB people occupy a place of resistance, activism, production of culture and resilience for these groups. In this SHARP Talk we open space to think about the important role of the shelters for trans and LGB people that were born from the activism and resistance of these groups: their history, the fight for dignity and the construction of a culture for the transformation of society.
Interventions
Casa 1 - Centro de Cultura e Acolhimento LGBT em São Paulo is a reception centre for LGBT young people expelled from home by their families, a cultural centre and a social clinic in the city centre of São Paulo. Casa 1 has three spaces: the first one houses a residence for 20 LGBT young people expelled from home, a public community library and a room for homeless people with distribution of clothes and toiletries. The other two spaces are Galpão Casa 1, which operates daily from 10am to 10pm with socio-educational programmes (English and Spanish classes, ENEM preparation courses, wrestling, sewing, modelling, singing, yoga and much more). The third is also the Social Clinic with free and low-cost psychotherapy services. In total, approximately 3,500 people are assisted monthly by Casa 1.
Casa T Lisboa, the first Transvestiginal Shelter, socialization and autonomy Centre, created to welcome trans migrant people. Casa T is a project born in Lisbon in the middle of the pandemic in an attempt to respond to the "particularly unsustainable" housing crisis for trans migrant people and others in marginalized situations. The initiative has no state support and has been funded through crowdfunding
