Overview

In Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a library in the El Fondo neighbourhood focuses on its cuisine. This Catalan previously working-class city, with persistent social movements, and countercultural associations, is now home to a large immigrant population, working in trade and services, studying at university centres. Residents, users of various languages and alphabets, of diverse social origins, cultures and nationalities, are relying on cuisine as a non-verbal language, learning know-hows and the familiarity associated with traditional food, are championing for Kitchens of the World. This lecture will present a case study about this library, where readings are based on digital, paper and sociability practices, oriented primarily to social inequalities and the struggle against xenophobia and racism.
