University outreach and Epistemologies of the South: a needed approach

September 13, October 1 and November 26, 2019, 14h30

Framework

The Brazilian Public University is an institution born in the twentieth century that, since its foundation, has always reflected the social contradictions and society projects in dispute in the country, both at a national level as in the regions where the most diverse campuses were installed. In this context, two genuinely Brazilian praxis emerged from the 1960s that, to a greater or lesser extent, influenced both the teaching, research and outreach in these higher education institutions, as well as the Latin American educational scenario: the work of Paulo Freire and Latin American Thought in Science-Technologies-Society (PLACTS).

In this sense, the debate series “UNIVERSITY OUTREACH AND EPISTEMOLOGIES OF THE SOUTH” aims to promote a dialogue between the Epistemologies of the South and the two referentials above, used in outreach projects and programmes in articulation with the research and teaching next to the grassroots classes. With this reflexive movement, we seek an approach and complementarity that allows us to broaden and deepen our understanding of the role and strategies of the sectors of the public universities that work together with the popular movements in the most varied struggles to overcome patriarchy, colonialism, heteronormativity and capitalism, as practices that promote oppression, prejudice, discrimination and extreme socio-cultural and economic inequality.
