Abstract

Communication theory has historically been dominated by an "imagery transmitter" with many parallels with the colonial standpoint and epistemology of the "North" currently under criticism by authors like Sousa Santos. It is precisely the "flow of communication in Latin America" (Paulo Freire, Juan Díaz Bordenave, Luis Ramiro Beltrán, etc.) that from the 70’s until now subjected to critique Western and capitalist models of understanding communication, to propose a perspective to establish communication relations with the processes of transformation of reality. In this model that emerges from the South, community media become a paradigmatic example.

This presentation intends to synthesize the key elements of discussions, to propose a series of elements that should serve to define the communication policies of social movements amid the current paradigmatic transitions

Victor Manuel Marí Sáez holds a degree in Communication Sciences (Universidad Complutense) and PhD in Journalism (University of Sevilla). Currently he is Professor of Communication Theory and Communication for Development and Social Change at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication of the University of Cadiz (Spain). He is director of  Commons. Revista de Comunicación y Ciudadanía Digital, and principal investigator of the project "Communication for Development and Social Change in Spain: designing indicators for measuring its social impact" (2015-2017) of the National Research Plan - Spain.
