Abstract

In the line of a critical sociolinguistic line of research on multilingual contexts and repertoires resulting from migration, transnational movement and mobility, as well as the emerging language policies, we invite two distinguished researchers in the field of language policies and education to share their work, situated in very distinct sites and traditions:  one, language policies of the Portuguese nation-state and their effects on new language planning activity related to Portuguese sign-language (LGP), as well as related literacy practices; two, official bilingual policies in Finland and the tensions emerging from the position of Swedish in this context.

In bringing together work deriving from unrelated multilingual repertories and language policies, it is our aim to develop a debate among researchers and participants that focuses the ideologies and tensions emerging from distinct scales of sociolinguistic and socioeducational recognition, both with impact on research and practice: official nation-states with distinct traditions of multilingual policy; and the local educational dynamics involved in the actual identification and development of multilingual and multimodal repertoires.
