Abstract

This conference explores the 'emerging powers' debate, focusing specifically on the rising international profile of three countries: Brazil, Russia and Turkey. Our speakers will discuss these actors' perceptions, interests and concrete interventions, thereby drawing conclusions regarding their contribution to peace and security in the context of a changing multilateral system.


Bios

Carlos Gustavo Poggio Teixeira has a Ph.D. in International Studies from Old Dominion University. His most recent book, "Brazil, the United States, and the South American Subsystem: Regional Politics and the Absent Empire" (2012) was chosen by Foreign Affairs Magazine as one of the best international relations books of 2012. He currently is professor of International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-SP) and at the Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP), both in São Paulo.

Ali Bilgiç has a Ph.D. from Aberystwyth University. He is section editor responsible for Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa for Journal of Contemporary European Research. He was a post-doctoral researcher in the European Commission 7th Framework Programme: Converging and Conflicting Ethical Values in the Internal/External Security Continuum in Europe (June 2010- April 2011) and in the TÜBİTAK Project Security Dilemma and Irregular Migration: The Case of Turkey, (April 2011-August 2011). He is currently drafting a book for the Routledge Publishing.

Andrey Makarychev  is an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow in the Institute for East European Studies at the Free University of Berlin, where he is working on a project on “Russia, the EU and models of international society”. His fields of research include Russian foreign and security policies, EU-Russian relations in the common neighbourhood, regionalism, and federalism. His previous academic affiliations include George Mason University (research internship, 1994-1995), the Centre for Security Studies (2000-2001), the Danish Institute for International Studies (2004) and Nizhny Novgorod Linguistic University (professorship in international relations and political science, 2005-2010).
