Abstract
In the study of social movements, the analysis of the interaction between them and the State has gained special relevance. Thus, the analysis of public order management and protest policing became a key element to understand the forms of "non-conventional" political action, mostly thanks to authors such as Donatella della Porta e Olivier Fillieule. Particularly, it showed that the innovations within the context of social movements also led to changes in the strategies to control them. This clearly is what happened in Portugal after the 1962 major academic crisis, which was a turning point in the police control of student, mainly university, places. With these premises, this presentation aims at analysing the impact of the intensification of student protest during Salazarist Portugal, mostly since 1962, on public order control management and protest policing until 1974. The empirical foundation for this analysis will be, mainly, the documentation existing in Pide/DGS and Ministry of the Interior archives, as well as press sources (Diário de Notícias, Diário de Lisboa, etc.).
