Joana Brilhante


Biography

Associate researcher at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra. She holds a degree in Anthropology, a Master's in Human Biology and Evolution, and a PhD in Human Rights in Contemporary Societies from the University of Coimbra, with a thesis entitled "The Island Effect: LGBTQ People's Experiences through the Lens of Geographical Isolation". She has been an associate researcher on several projects, including Multiversidade (2022/23) - White Paper on Multiple and Intersectional Discrimination, promoted by NOVA School of Law, Lisbon, and she is currently part of the TRACE project - Tracing Queer Citizenship over Time: Ageing, Ageism and Age-Related LGBTI+ Politics in Europe, based at CES, University of Coimbra. Her research interests include the geographies of sexualities, island studies, and queer studies, with a focus on qualitative methodologies and critical, intersectional approaches. She is co-coordinator of the Sexualities Research Group (GPS-CES) and was awarded the Young Scholar Award by the European Sociological Association in 2024.
