Xenophobia in the time of pandemic: othering, anti-Asian attitudes, and COVID-19

Overview

This article analyses how previously existing xenophobic attitudes and behaviours were (re)activated by US elites in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, using fear, regarding illness and death, as a hate tool, placing a guilt label over China and the city of Wuhan, giving an identity and nationality to the virus, targeting Asian individuals.
