Bio notes

José Manuel Mendes, Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra. Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), coordinator of the Observatory of Risk and Main Editor Chefe of Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais.

Ana Raquel Matos is a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES) and member of the research group on Science, Economics and Society (NECES) since 2007. She holds a PhD in Sociology - doctoral program on "Governance, Knowledge and Innovation" from the School of Economics/CES, University of Coimbra (2012). Her current research interests focus on the relation between "public participation and democracy", "social movements and collective action", "citizen participation in health", and "science and Knowledge(s)". She is particularly interested in the analysis of protest events as participatory mechanisms, and in the assessment of protest impacts on the (re)formulation of public policies.

Jesús Sabariego. PHD in Human Rights and Development with the thesis "Os Direitos Humanos no Fórum Social Mundial: Uma nova ecologia social da identificação entre cultura e política para os movimientos sociais (2001 - 2005)". BA in Humanities (Archeology and History) and MA in Pedagogy for teaching certification (Philosophy). Professor of Contemporary Political and Social History for Sociology and Political Sciences at  Pablo de Olavide University until  2012. Coordinator (2001 - 2007) and professor (2006 - 2008) of the Doctoral Programme in Human Rights and Development and the "José Carlos Mariátegui" Human Rights Research Group  (2004 - 2008), coordinator until2012 of the university cooperation programmes with the UN, EU and the UNESCO Chair in Social Participation. Lecturer and visiting fellow in Latin American and European universities, advisor for several public organisations and the third sector. My research interessts include multiple disciplines of Human Sciences. Currently developing a post-doctoral research , financed by FCT, on social movements from southern Europe in the context of the global crisis and its relations with other social movements in the world. Author of several published works such as: "Você tem Direitos! Os Direitos Fundamentais" (2001); "La globalización de las relaciones entre cultura y política: Una nueva ecología social de la identificación" (2005); La democracia en proceso participativo: principios, fundamentos y requisitos" (2006); Los otros derechos humanos. Cultura, política y movimientos sociales en el Foro Social Mundial" (2007); "Estudio cualitativo de las demandas culturales de los universitarios andaluces" (2011). As translator, was part of the translating team of the first edition of  "Crítica da Razão Indolente" (2003), by Boaventura de Sousa Santos.

Augusto Jobim do Amaral, PhD in Higher Contemporary Studies (Political History, History of Ideas and International Comparative Studies) at the University of Coimbra  (Portugal); PhD, MA and Specialist in Forensic Sciences by the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). BA in Legal and Social Sciences at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) and Post-Graduate in European Penal and Economic Law by the University of Coimbra.  Professor of the Post-Grad Programme in Forensic Sciences ( PPGCCrim/MA and PhD) by the  Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) branch Criminology, Crime and Public Security. Guest-researcher at Ius Gentium Conimbrigae (IGC) - Centre for Human Rights of the University of Coimbra, with experience in the field of Law and History of Ideas, focusing on Criminology, Human Rights, Penal Law and Penal Procedure, Philosophy and Sociology of Law. Acts, mainly, on the following themes, currently leading the Research Group "Criminology, Punitive Culture and Phlisofical Critique": penal culture, punitive violence, human rights, social control and public security, political sociology and philosophy; criminology, penal law and penal procedure.

Fernanda Martins, Professor at Vale do Itajaí University (UNIVALI). Phd candidate in the Post-Grad Programme in Criminal Sciences at  PUC/RS. Mestre em Direito pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), field of theory, Philosophy and History of Law. BA in History at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and BA in Law at  pela  Vale do Itajaí University (UNIVALI).
