Seminar

The State and Social Welfare Reform in Brazil

Sérgio Ricardo Ribeiro Lima (Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz)

April 5, 2018, 14h30

Room 2, CES | Alta

Overview

The president of Brazil - Michel Temer - has been trumpeting a false discourse about the Social Welfare deficit. He thus justifies the urgent need for reform, at the risk of jeopardizing future pensions, as well as the country's economic growth. Our objective in this seminar is to show that the Social Welfare System in Brazil is not in deficit, rather an accounting manipulation of the System’s budget in order to justify the reform for the sake of financial purposes.
