Abstract

The objective is to analyze the way culture and its different components are part of overall urban development processes and frameworks. It will target in particular the notion of urban conservation and regeneration, understood both as conservation and development activities in historic urban areas and culture-led development strategies in other urban areas. The survey will underline regional specificities and innovative approaches in terms of urban conservation and regeneration, as well as gaps and difficulties encountered at the political or operational level. It will propose a vision for the future and explore ways in which culture could be a key asset in renewing urban development. Relevant examples of policies or tools developed in specific cities of the region will be quoted as necessary to illustrate the overall analysis. Results of the survey will be used by UNESCO as scientific and technical input to prepare the Global Report.
