BIOGRAPHY
Annette Desmarais is a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Manitoba and Research Chair of Canáda for the areas of Human Rights, Social Justice and Food Sovereignty. Before obtaining a PhD in Geography, she was a farmer for 14 years and worked as a technician for a decade in the transnational agrarian movement La Via Campesina, where she continues to develop participatory-based research with several member organizations in different contexts (Europe, North America and Latin America).
His experience and expertise in food sovereignty, agrarian transformations, development theories, international politics and rural social movements will be fundamental contributions to the definition of the theoretical and methodological approaches of the JUSTFOOD Project, especially in the selection of case studies, conducting fieldwork and the co-production of knowledge together with producer organizations. In addition, her long career as a farmer, technician and activist will significantly support the communication and dissemination of the project's results and its translation into public policy recommendations.
Annette has numerous books and articles published, which attests to her importance in the international scientific community with whom the JUSTFOOD Project intends to dialogue. Among these publications are the books “La Vía Campesina: Globalization and the Power of the Peasantry” (2007), “Food Sovereignty: Reconnecting Food, Nature and Community” (2010) and “Food Sovereignty in Canada: Producing Fair and Sustainable Food ”(2011).
